Shawn R. McMillan
June 02, 1975 - September 02, 2001
Shawn was a graduate of Tarpon Springs High School and a 1999 graduate of
Florida State University. He attended Nova Southeastern University School of Law
and was a recipient of the Goodwin Fellow Scholarship. He was active in
State politics and served as a Messenger and Page to high profile politicians
including Senator Curt Kiser, Representative Ron Saunders, Chairman of the House
Appropriations Committee and Representative, R.Z. Safley. He served as a
member of the FSU Government Association of the Office of Legislative Affairs. He
was named Director of Student Lobbying and was a liaison between FSU, Student
Government and the Florida Legislature. During the 1998 legislative session,
he served as a student intern to Senate President, Toni Jennings. He was a
member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity and held several positions including
Treasurer, House Manager, new member education coordinator, historian and pledge
recruiter. He actively promoted school spirit as a member of the Scalp Hunters
and Seminole Boosters at FSU. He was also named "Delta Man" by the
Delta Delta Delta Sorority in Tallahassee.
More than 50 family members, friends and beloved ATO Fraternity Brothers wrote letters to the State Attorney assuring him that Shawn never would have shot himself. All were ignored although there is not one piece of evidence that Shawn ever touched the gun. In fact, the only persons seen handling the gun were Dan Nordmark and Bernie Dillman. The determination of Suicide as the Manner of Death has now been removed from Shawn's Death Certificate.
There are many unanswered questions surrounding the events, circumstances and investigation into Shawn’s horrible death. The family, ATO Fraternity brothers and true friends who greatly loved and admired Shawn know without question that he never would have committed suicide. He was an exceptionally bright, handsome and wonderful young man who was happily planning for his future. We love and miss him and have suffered unspeakable pain since his death. As to be expected, the numerous false statements, unprofessional and misleading reports surrounding Shawn’s death have greatly intensified our sorrow. Please search your hearts and memories and help us learn what really happened to Shawn that night - we need to know the truth. If anyone out there has truthful and accurate information, no matter what it is, please share it with us. You can call, write a letter, or E-mail us. Please help us learn the truth. Thank you.
